Skin 101: How to Build an Evening Skincare Routine

Air-conditioning, pollution, sun damage; our skin really is up against it throughout the day (particularly if you live in the city). That said, your evening skincare routine is the optimal time to repair and rejuvenate your complexion. So take this time to indulge your skin with nourishing textures and active ingredients, and allow them to work their magic while you sleep.

Ideally, your PM routine should begin the minute you get home to avoid pollution, dirt, and grime from sitting on your skin; clogging up pores and building congestion. And while it can sometimes seem overly complicated, it doesn’t need to be. We’re going to talk you through how to build the foundation of your evening skincare routine in just a few steps.

Cleanse 

Two words to live by: double cleanse. Why? Your first cleanse works to gently break down makeup, SPF, dirt, grime and excess oils from the skin, whilst your second cleanse will address your skin type and key concerns, such as breakouts, dehydration, and redness. Start with a gentle oil-based cleanser such as Clinique’s Take It Away Cleansing Balm and then move onto a lightweight, hydrating gel-based formula such as the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser (trust us, this will become a staple in your evening routine).

Tone

After cleansing, follow with a toner to help to sweep anyway any excess dirt, oil and dead skin that your first cleanse alone hasn’t removed. Mask

Serums and Treatments

At night, however, your skin is in the ultimate chill-out mode ready to repair and renew itself – making it the perfect time to apply all of those active ingredients including retinoids (a form of vitamin A), alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs; e.g. lactic and glycolic) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs; e.g. salicylic acid) which all help to increase cell turnover overnight. Just opt for one of these hard-working ingredients per routine to maximise the results and minimise irritation.

Nourish

As a final step in your routine, nourish your skin with moisture-boosting ingredients.
